Application Management

When you prepare for applications, you feel like drowning in websites, deadlines, and brochures. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the application process. Here are some tips for managing the college application process. To stay sane, follow these steps:

  • Check and then file some more. Keep it all under control from the beginning, and you’ll save yourself time and energy later on. Get your hands on a filing cabinet. Get some folders and label them as follows:
    • Transcripts/grades
    • Standardized test scores
    • Essays(personal statement)
    • Recommendations
    • Extracurricular activities
    • Interview & school visit info
    • Resume
    • Awards
    • Art or writing portfolio
    • Scholarships & financial aid info
    • Summer programs
    • Brochures and forms
    • Complete applications

When you come across information about an interesting summer program, drop it in the summer programs folder. If you get complements on a research paper you’ve written, slip them into your writing portfolio folder. Having all the information you need well organized and at your fingertips will be incredibly useful once you start filling out college applications. After you’ve completed your applications, whether online or on paper, make copies and keep them on file.

  • Stay on top of the deadlines. Regular college applications are due starting November 30, and the deadline season run through February - unless you apply early, in which case they’re due in November 1. Use the deadline checklist to keep track of each and every important deadline. Include important dates for standardized test, financial aid, college applications, and scholarships. On the checklist, create an organizational system using colored pens, stickers, gold stars-whatever works for you.
